BRIGHT FUTURES

Help promising disadvantaged students become health care heroes

The New Jewish Home helped transform a shy high school girl into a confident medical student

When Grace was a little girl, her mother— a nurse and single mom from Ghana—would bring her along to the pediatrician’s office where she worked. Grace decided then that she wanted to be a pediatrician when she grew up. But what were the chances that a girl from a poor immigrant family in a disadvantaged neighborhood would be able to make that dream come true?

Now, thanks to The New Jewish Home’s Geriatrics Career Development (GCD) program, she’s on her way. This fall, she begins classes at CUNY’s seven-year medical program.

GCD, The New Jewish Home’s workforce development program, helps promising students of color overcome obstacles to successful careers in health care. And it’s all possible thanks to support from our generous donors. Would you consider making a contribution today to help fund this critical program?

During her three-year GCD internship, Grace learned practical skills and got access to professional development and learning support. The caring staff created a supportive environment, helping her cope with personal problems and encouraging her to aim high. GCD built Grace’s confidence and opened the door to the future she dreamed of.

The GCD program has made it possible for hundreds of bright students to access successful careers in health care. Only a small percentage of them follow Grace’s path to medical school, but many of them become essential staff members at The New Jewish Home.

This popular and effective program has a long waiting list. Your gift will enable us to accept more students, helping them realize their dreams while building a pipeline of motivated, well-trained health care workers for The New Jewish Home and other NYC health care institutions. Please consider making a generous donation now.
