“The spoon that stirs the pot makes things happen.”
That advice from Kittay House Senior Apartment tenant, Edna Nelkin, is part of Bronx Seniors Share Secrets to a Good Life in the May 7 issue of the Bronx Journal.
The piece features both video and written reports from a dozen journalism students from Lehman College who recently visited Kittay House to interview residents and record elements of their lives.
Included in the Bronx Journal story is sage advice from 64 year old Bill Regan, who lives at Kittay House with his beloved poodle and advises: “Don’t let things bother you too much.”
Another tenant, Dr. Laura Singer, likens aging to a gift of extra time, and alerts the students that people are still growing and changing even at 95.
Sol Levine proffers some excellent relationship advice in his recounting of courting his underage neighbor and how she became his wife of 60 years.
The stories and videos assembled by the students are a testimony to a world gone by – and to the young reporter’s skills.
Kittay tenant and retired journalist, Betty Ruth Caplan, offered words of advice for aspiring journalists. “Just remember, you can make your own future,” she says. “Anything that captures your attention, write about it.”
