Happy Passover to all who are celebrating

Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Chag Sameach, Gut Yontif, Happy Holidays.

Good Afternoon Jewish Home Manhattan.

Today is Thursday, April 9th.

Happy Passover to all who are celebrating.

In Jewish Literature, Passover is called zman kherutaynu, זמן חרותינו, the Season of Our Freedom.

One way that we celebrate freedom during the Passover Seder is to invite and to reward asking questions. At some times, and in some situations, people are punished for asking questions. Questions can threaten people in power. In the story of the Exodus, the Pharaoh was not used to being questioned. His arrogance and defensiveness brought him and his people a great deal of suffering.

There is so much power in our community

—Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Good Morning Jewish Home Manhattan.

Today is Wednesday, April 8.

There is so much power in our community, in our relationships, in the expertise of our professionals and in the tenacity and resilience of the older adults who live at The New Jewish Home. Do you know there are two people living in the Home today who were born before the Flu Pandemic of 1918? And indeed, the sum of the ages of everyone currently receiving care at The New Jewish Home in Manhattan is over 34,000 years. Thirty-four millennia of hard-won experience and accrued wisdom among the residents and patients who give our community its very purpose. We will certainly endure with such resources in our midst.

My mother once told me a story about the year I was born

—Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Good Evening Jewish Home Manhattan.

Today is Tuesday, April 7.

My mother once told me a story about the year I was born. We lived downtown in Greenwich Village and as part of our daily routine, she would push me in the carriage the few blocks to Washington Square Park. As it happened, in 1971 NYC experienced the most rainfall in almost 60 years. And during one stretch it rained day after day after day.  She couldn’t take me outside for almost two weeks. She was cooped up and going stir crazy with fussy infant (Sorry Mom!). She told me she just sat on the couch and cried and thought it would never end. Even though, of course, it did.

And another day of work and life and care stands before us

—Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Good Morning to Everyone at The New Jewish Home

Today is Monday April 6.

And another day of work and life and care stands before us.

There is no one receiving these words who does not rely on the care of other people. And there is no one receiving these words who can not provide some care to others. Some reassurance. Some affirmation. Some concern. Some love.

What is courage?

—Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Good morning Jewish Home

Today is Friday, April 3

What is courage?
What does it mean to be strong?
What does it mean to be brave?

It is not the same as being fearless. There are plenty of things in life of which to be afraid.
Plenty of things in our world that are scary. Someone fearless may be someone foolish.

It will be a new day, we are in this together

—Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Good Evening Jewish Home.

Today is Thursday, April 2.

Because the coronavirus has changed so much about the way we are living and working day-to-day, it is easy to feel lost and disoriented, to imagine that this new way of living is going to be with us forever. That may be understandable, BUT it isn’t true. What IS true is that for however long we have to make our way through this, we are now one day closer to the end of this ordeal than we were this morning. Each day, with all its challenges, is a victory in itself.

Even when I’m not in the room with you

—Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Meaningful Life

Text from today’s First Good Day Jewish Home Manhattan.

Today is Thursday, April 2

A few times each day we come over the PA system to offer words of encouragement and some music to raise our spirits.

One of the greatest challenges of this crisis is that is strikes at one of our greatest strengths — our sense of community. Often when we are together we feel safer. So in this moment we are pained because we actually keep one another safer by keeping further apart. It has been called Social Distancing. But, really, it’s only Physical Distancing.  We want to stay connected: socially, emotionally, and spiritually with one another.
