Jesus Hernandez, RN, Takes the Lead and Reflects on Building a New COVID-19 Unit from the Bottom Up

Just a few months after becoming the assistant director of nursing, Jesus was asked to become the clinical lead at The New Jewish Home’s COVID-19 Recovery Unit.

Jesus Hernandez, who joined The New Jewish Home in 2012 as a nurse manager, stepped up in October 2020 to become assistant director of nursing. Just a few months later, while still adjusting to his new role, he was asked to take on another big challenge—to serve as the clinical lead of The New Jewish Home’s COVID-19 Recovery Unit.

The rehabilitation team at The New Jewish Home’s Sarah Neuman Westchester campus shines at helping clients get well and go home. Among the tools they use to achieve excellent results is a new gait trainer, the Rifton E-Pacer, which helps make rehabilitation safer and more effective for staff and patients.

Offering a Unique Solution to a Growing Nursing Home Workforce Challenge

Since 2006, The New Jewish Home has trained underserved youth to create a workforce pipeline in long-term care. Learn more about our successful Geriatrics Career Development (GCD) program in this Skilled Nursing News article.

The New Jewish Home’s SkillSpring program (formerly known as Geriatrics Career Development program) has helped teens and young adults in New York City pursue careers in health care since 2006. Program participants are immersed in long-term care settings and provide more than 8,000 hours of companionship and clinical care to older adults each year.

Alumni from our GCD programs have access to resources from our Workforce program to help them meet academic and career goals. Learn more about our high school program for teens and our young adult program.
